I’ve heard two things this week that stuck with me.
- A friend who reminded me that I have so much more energy in person than I do in the content I’ve been creating.
- A mentor said that we all should leverage our personality and unique perspective to say or do things differently, or as she put it “Vanilla is fine…but it NEEDS something else, like chocolate chips!”.
I’m currently on this journey to discover my own voice but haven’t thought much about how you actually accomplish that special sauce. I figure if I take the first step, and start creating content, the “unique” voice will start to come out on its own.
So yes, you may need to just skim this and my other content until it gets better!
If you have a high tolerance for pain, or are just in the same boat, keep reading! (and you are awesome)
There is still the fear that I don’t know how to create the energy and the uniqueness that will make any of this content good. But I’m not letting that hold me back. I have two young children and I’ve seen them try to learn new things and it’s funny that it almost seems innate that when things are hard we want to give up. And then as parents, we teach them to keep trying because we know that it’s the only way to grow and succeed.
It’s been such a joy to watch my kids try, and fail, and fight, and cry, and try again, and quit, and try again, and to experience all the emotions that roll through them in that process.
I don’t like to see them struggle or fail but the joy comes in knowing that they will succeed and that I play a part in that success.
I’ve had some great role models in my life and have been helped along the way for sure. But I also know that there is so much that I’ve had to figure out for myself. Too much to list out. There is something to be said for having to figure it out on your own.
There is a bit of pride that comes when you can find success on your own even after all the mistakes along the way.
FOR THE SKIMMERS — if you can learn to ride a bike, you can learn to create content, or anything else for that matter. Humans are amazing!
I guess the point that I’m coming to is that I know that the work I’m doing now may not be the most dynamic or interesting work that has ever been done. The words I’m writing may not really strike a chord with anyone and it may not be very unique. The videos I create may not have the energy they need to hold an audience’s attention. The recordings I post may be pretty vanilla. But with all that, it’s the trying that matters.
It’s all about effort. And behind that effort is courage and fear, excitement and anxiety, energy and fatigue, success and failure.
And the second point I’m coming to is that the things that I’ve succeeded at in life, that I didn’t give up on, were all driven by passion.
It’s all about passion. To truly be excited by something and energized in your efforts provides endless fuel to push through the ups and downs.
So, I’m focusing my energy where I feel truly inspired and will carry with that the faith that the journey will be rewarding because it was never about the final destination, but only about the growth along the way.
ONE MORE FOR THE SKIMMERS — EFFORT and PASSION… the two secrets of my future success.
